Gabrielle Perez of Three One Three
The New York City transplant outshined her peers and won 1st place with her shoe design, Tactile in the ROOY X FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) Challenge. The competition welcomed FIT students in designing a shoe that would capture the tone and spirit of New York City for 2017. Tactile was voted and selected as 1st place winner by ROOY, a panel of guest judges from FIT, and from the ROOY community. Perez received a bachelor’s degree in accessories design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and continues to explore her passion in footwear. As a designer, Perez explores mixing materials with various color palettes, focusing on the details and isn’t afraid of experimentation.
I’m grateful to live in New York and be surrounded by inspiration. There’s not a day that goes by that I’m not taking a photo of an object, or someone’s outfit or some kind of street art.
Inspired by New York City, Tactile is a high-top style sneaker designed to be the highlight of any outfit. The high-top features perforated leather with a distinct ankle cut out and vulcanized outsole reminiscent of the tactile pavings in New York City’s subway platforms.
For this sneaker design I was inspired by my commute through New York. My main focus was on the tactile pavement that commuters are meant to stay behind on the subway platform. I also looked at supports on the platform to create lines on the upper.
The bottom of the sole is debossed and replicates tactile pavings with finishing touches of yellow speckles on a vulcanized rubber sole.
